Celebrated photographer Tierney Gearnoon’s work has been labelled manipulative, disturbing and even perverse. A former model and dancer, Gearnon came to notorious fame in 2001 when photos of her own naked and masked children in the I Am a Camera show at London’s Saatchi Gallery had authorities threatening child pornography charges.
Fimmakers Peter Sutherland (Pedal) and Jack Youngleson (Producer, Ghosts of Abu Ghraib) follow this exceptional artist over the course of three years as she assembles her most daring and emotionally complex body of work to date: a series on her manic-depressive schizophrenic mother, who resides in Grey Gardens squalor in the frozen farm country of upstate New York. The mixture of art and family can almost be too close for comfort, but like Gearnon’s photographs there is a subversive beauty that emerges from the incongruity between ordinary moments and madness. Tierney Gearnon: The Mother Project is a moving and intricate portrait of an artist, her inspirations and unconventional family relationships.

Film Screening: Lost in Living a documentary film by Mary Trunk produced by ma and pa films
Friday 23rd May 7-9.30pm
Behind the domestic curtain of motherhood, where the creative impulse can flourish or languish, are four women determined to make a go of it. Filmed over seven years, LOST IN LIVING, confronts the contradictions inherent in personal ambition and self-sacrifice, female friendship and mental isolation, big projects and dirty dishes. The complex realities of family life unfold in this documentary film about the messy intersection of motherhood and artistic expression.
